News / Remembering Selby Coalfield Miners

We’re delighted to announce that the Selby Mining Memorial is now open and situated in the Selby Community Woodland in Bondgate, Selby.  Native Architects are proud to have worked with Selby Town Council to create a fitting memorial to all the men and women that worked in the Selby coalfield and those who lost their lives, suffered major injuries, or worked for the Mines Rescue teams.

The memorial features half of an original winding wheel painted in the traditional colours of red and black and mounted on a red/orange brick plinth.  The top of the plinth and surrounding paving are finished with sandstone slabs.

For generations to come the wheel will stand as a permanent memorial to those who worked in what was once the deepest and largest coalfield in Europe.  The two memorial benches sited close by will provide a place for reflection and recollection of loved ones no longer with us.
